biography
Jenny Lohs is a freelance embroiderer. Born in Sydney, Australia, Jenny spent most of her childhood growing up with her large family in the Curator's quarters of the Australian National Botanic Gardens, Canberra ACT, crediting her love for botanical forms to her father, Curator at the gardens at this time.
Jenny recently moved to Newcastle from Nana Glen in regional NSW.
Early interest in needlework and the hand made has developed in recent years into a passion for white embroidery. Intensive study of Whitework with The Embroiderers' Guild NSW Inc. culminated in Guild Tutor Accreditation in Whitework in 2011.
Lifelong learning continues as Whitework, the genre, encourages further thought.
artist statement
The Whitework realm is vast and diverse in both character and technique, an embroidery realm that has seen adaptations over the course of time and across social classes and cultures around the globe.
Traditionally white on white or natural tone on tone embroidery, Whitework is now expressed in both traditionally inspired and contemporary forms, encompassing an abundance of opportunity in design, technique and medium.
I delight in exploring, expressing and combining the intricacies and aesthetics in nature, particularly botanical forms, with the ethereal beauty of Whitework.
My pieces integrate traditional roots within the context of today. Some works combine organic and other medium to realise the textures, lines and shapes; the play of light and shadow encourages further depth to the white on white or neutral tone designs. It is the character of this art form uniting with the rhythm of the stitch that embraces and awakens my creative spirit.
Working each piece to fruition celebrates mindfulness. From deep within, sensitivity, strength, application and technique, work hand in hand with inspiration, design and medium, nurturing purposeful time in the moment, with contemplation, action and reflection. Understanding brings connection, a tangible expression as a harmonious whole.
